To understand architecture is to understand its specific cultural and historical context with spatial and material vocabularies. The course begins with an investigation into an existing building, ends with a design proposal of a renovation project which will be presented by students on the last day. Design principles and architecture elements will be introduced along with the design process. The course emphasizes on the process of hands-on model making and drawing.
At the end of the course, student will be able to:
-have a more comprehensive understanding of the meaning of architecture and the process of architecture design
-abstract existing cultural, historical context and proposed architectural idea into geometry, form and materiality
-draw basic architecture drawings and make physical or computer models
Materials:
-first week: an object that can be taken apart into at least 15 pieces (e.g. a furniture, a bike, a clock, a coffee maker, an outdated camera, etc)
-drawing book or drawing paper
About the Instructor
Dewen Ju graduated from RISD in 2019 with a degree of Master of Architecture. Dewen has worked in 3SIX0 Architecture, Kengo Kuma & Associates as architectural designer; in Rhode Island School of Design as graduate teaching assistant. He is currently freelancing as part-time architectural designer and part-time painter in Chengdu, China.
