This past May, some GAAC students visited the Succession - solo exhibition of Jesse Mockrin at the Center of International Contemporary Art (CICA) Vancouver.
Students were able to appreciate the different art pieces created by Jesse Mockrin, curated by Viahsta Yuan. One of the featured artworks, above, pays homage to two historical works of art: Ludovico Mazzanti’s The Death of Lucretia and Artemisia Gentileschi’s Lucretia. In this painting, Mockrin makes use of a matte black background and the usage of hand gestures to mark the violation of the body.
Jesse Mockrin’s art explores the fluidity of gender and erases our preconceptions of gender roles. She enlarges, crops, and juxtaposes portions of master paintings and retells stories from history.
Students at GAAC have the opportunity to participate in monthly field trips to explore different art exhibitions happening in Vancouver. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to gather more inspiration for their art and expand their horizons beyond the classroom at GAAC!
